10 Things you can do for your Mental Health

Let’s chat about mental health.

Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. And we all struggle from time to time – me included.

In no particular order, here are 10 things you can do to take care of your mental health.

1. Get enough sleep πŸ›Œ

There are several articles and studies that indicate a lack of sleep or sleep disorders can actually increase your risk of depression. If I don’t get enough sleep, my brain gets foggy, I get cranky, and I generally have the disposition of a toddler that missed their nap. Basically, not enough sleep is not a good look on me.

2. Exercise β›ΉπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I can confirm that when I get in some form of regular exercise, not only do I feel better physically, I feel better mentally. My brain feels less cluttered when I exercise. And there is research to support the benefits of exercise and mental health.

3. Make healthy food choices 🍏

When I eat too much crappy food, my body is less than amused, and so is my brain.

4. Keep a gratitude journal ✍🏻

It’s amazing how powerful the simple act of writing down 2-3 things for which you’re grateful can lift your spirits. It’s not necessary to keep a journal though. I often will simply list out things I’m grateful for in my head before I go to sleep. Just thinking about them puts a smile on my face.

5. Spend time with a friend πŸ‘

Don’t underestimate the power of friendship. If I go too long without some level of friend time, my mental health suffers. With all things Covid, it’s been a real challenge to get enough friend time. Lately, I’ve managed this with phone calls, texting, and masked walks.

6. Spent time in nature πŸ•

Every summer we usually go camping for a weekend at Fundy National Park. That one weekend is pure bliss for me. From freshly brewed coffee first thing in the morning to hikes, kayaking, and eventually sitting around a campfire at night, I love it all. Being surrounded by the woods feels like a warm hug from Mother Nature. Those 2 days of camping do wonders for my mental health.

7. Seek out professional help πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈ

If nothing seems to be working and your quality of life is suffering, seek out professional help. Please. Do it. Your mental health matters and so do you.

8. Take a mental health day 🎬

I’ve been known to skip work to take a mental health day. I love those days. Depending on my mood, I may spend it binge-watching Netflix OR reading a book OR taking a nap OR all three. 😎

9. Do something just for you πŸ›€πŸ»

The options for this one are limitless. The only criteria is that you do something purely for YOU. Some things I’ve done for myself have included shopping, getting a pedicure, and…quitting my job. πŸ˜‰

10. Meditate πŸ§˜πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Research shows that meditation can help ease depression and anxiety. A meditation practice can be something as simple and basic as sitting quietly for 5 minutes while reciting a mantra.
